2019 has been a bit of a roller coaster for my skin. If you guys remember my posts towards the end of 2018 you will know that my skin was in an absolute state. I was constantly breaking out and absolutely nothing I did was fixing it. I was stressed, run down, hormonal and grieving and unsurprisingly my skin really suffered for it.

For Christmas, my Mum very kindly bought me some Liz Earle skincare and thus began my attempts at a regular skincare routine. Within a month or two of falling into the routine my skin had cleared up substantially and I felt much better for it, but as with all things I have fallen off the wagon multiple times this year, let my skincare slide when I’ve been feeling tired or lazy, and have noticed those breakouts happening again more and more frequently.

As the year has progressed, I have also been adding new products to my routine. Some of these had been sent to me to test out, others are products I’ve seen on Youtube and wanted to try or stumbled across in TK Maxx at crazy discount and thought ‘eh why not?‘.

I was lucky enough to be invited into Levres Aesthetics in Chester recently for a gifted skin consultation and facial, and while I was there the wonderful Abbie told me that my skincare routine might actually be doing my skin more harm than good. I was using a lot of different products each day, and she told me that the ingredients and PH balance in these products would be affecting the way my skin was working on my face. She suggested that I strip my skincare routine right back for a little while and see if I noticed a difference, before gradually re-introducing some of my favourite products once again.

And have I noticed a difference? You bet your ass I have! Within 4 days my blemishes have got smaller, less angry looking and in a lot of cases have cleared up completely. My skin feels less irritated and what’s even nicer is that the whole skincare routine takes about 5 minutes to do therefore making it a lot more hassle free…

So the morning routine, aka: lets get this over with as soon as humanly possible because I wanted 10 extra minutes in bed again and now I am late…

In the mornings I like to keep things super simple, so my morning skincare routine now consists of just three products. First of all, I use the Liz Earle Hot Cloth Cleanser all over the face to clean off any dirt or grime from the night and any residual makeup I’ve missed the night before. I follow this with the Clinique Super City Block SPF 40 – this is a holy grail product for me and one thing that I will use every single day without fail. I’m very fair skinned so a high SPF is especially important, and I like this one because it also helps to block against pollution too which is perfect if like me, you spend a lot of your time in the city. Finally I will put on some moisturiser and then I’m ready to go – I am currently using the Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream* which was kindly gifted to me earlier in the year.

The evening skincare routine is slightly more involved, but only slightly! I will usually remove my makeup first with a micellar water – the one I am currently favouring is the Garnier one for sensitive skin. I have recently invested in some reusable cotton pads to help do my bit for the environment and I’m absolutely loving them – they’re a tiny bit rougher than using cotton wool pads so I feel like my skin gets a gentle exfoliation every time I use them too. Once my makeup is off it is back in with the Liz Earle Hot Cloth Cleanser followed by the Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic. This is normally where I would get stuck in with my serums but for the time being I’m leaving them out of my routine and instead I’m mixing my Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream* with one drop of the Odacite Pure Elements BI + C Black Cumin-Cajeput Pimples Serum aka: the wonder product. I was introduced to this during a recent visit to Space NK and I can’t tell you how amazing it is. It’s pricey for such a small bottle however as you’re only using one drop at a time it really lasts! It’s designed to remove the bacteria that is causing you to break out and therefore help heal your blemishes. I cannot tell you the difference it has made to my skin – I am truly in love!

I hope this has helped anyone going through a similar struggle with their skin! I was told to focus for a while on just the products that I know have made a difference for me in the past. If you have any products which you know work wonders for your skin, simply strip back your routine to include just those items and hopefully you should notice a difference too! Let me know if you have any wonder products you think I should try too!
