Since the heady days of 2006 when I first started experimenting with my style (shopping exclusively in Sohos and refusing to wear anything that wasn’t black and either a) embellished with studs or b) covered in skulls) I have reached, again and again, for an all black outfit.
I don’t know what it is about the all black colour block, but I just find it so comforting. Sometimes, I think that wearing all black can hide a multitude of sins, it makes me feel confident when I’m not having the best body-image day, it hides my hormonal bloating pretty well (and trust me, there is a lot of that), and obviously should I decide to do a total 180 career change and become a ninja/super assassin then my uniform is pretty much covered.
It’s a classic, it makes me feel chic and put together, and it gives me the confidence that when I’m reaching for clothes in a rush in the morning, everything is going to go together pretty damn well. Sometimes I wonder if maybe I should break out of my comfort zone a little, do something crazy and off the cuff and dress head to toe in pink for the day but that’s just not me. I couldn’t do it.
I joke that my outfit reflects my innermost feelings/my soul/the state of my heart when I want to be all emo and dramatic, but in reality I guess the reason I remain faithful to the all black combination is that it’s what I know works for me, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
On this day in particular I was trying to channel my inner Parisienne in preparation for my trip to Paris, and therefore wanted to put together an outfit that was for the most part chic and minimal. I combined my favourite black & Other Stories sweater (legit this took me forever to get my hands on, I’ll tell you the story one day but for now both my brain and my bank balance need to recover #overdramatic), my Topshop straight leg jeans and my favourite Topshop cowboy boots.
I don’t know how much longer I will be able to get away with outfits like this now the nice weather is on its way again, but I thought I’d share this with you for one last dose of cooler outfit inspo before we’re all firmly in t-shirts and bare legs once again.
What I’m wearing:
