I never knew until recently, the effect a great pair of boots can have on your confidence. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved a good pair of shoes but I’ve never thought of them as an item to build your outfit around, more like an item to add the finishing touch to a killer combination.
Then, a month ago, this pair of little gold boots found their way into my wardrobe and all of a sudden things changed. I felt like Season 1 Rachel from Friends:
“These are my ”I don’t need a job, I don’t need my parents because I’ve got really great boots’ boots”
I mean, I do in actual fact have a pretty fantastic job and I do love my parents but lets just use artistic license here ok? Ok.
I first clapped eyes on these babies at London Fashion Week, when Smashbox very kindly invited me to their studio for a boutique pop up with Look magazine. Rosie Fortescue was there wearing a pair of fantastic silver boots which it transpired were from New Look. I knew I needed them in my life, so once payday rolled around I headed straight to the New Look website to find them and was thrilled to find they were in the sale for £14 but heartbroken they were sold out in my size – then I found the gold version.
I don’t normally wear gold – I’ve always been a fan of silver jewellery and therefore my entire wardrobe has been built around my monochrome black/white/grey aesthetic with silver accents so I wasn’t sure how much wear I’d actually get out of them and seriously debated the purchase for a good half hour.
Eventually I decided that at that price it was stupid not to get them, they were gorgeous and I was sure I’d find a way to style them. They arrived and I promptly fell in love – that Friday I was feeling under the weather and as I got up for work I decided to be hugely daring and inject a bit of sparkle into my work day so I wore the boots to work.
As you may have read in my creative vs corporate post last week, I have always felt quite stifled with the corporate dress code so you can imagine how amazing it felt to strut through London’s financial district amongst all the grey, the suits, the miserable morning faces and the briefcases with the most fantastic, eye catching pair of gold boots on. I genuinely felt like I was in a film or something strutting my stuff around London for the day and with the compliments I received my confidence just soared.
Since then the boots have barely left my feet, and I actually now keep a compliment tally every time I wear them – everyone just seems to adore them. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve been asked where they’re from, the amount of little girls pointing them out to their parents in the street and how many people’s eyes are just automatically drawn to them as I walk down the pavement.
I wouldn’t say I’m an exhibitionist by any stretch of the imagination but this feeling is one I’ve never experienced before – I just want to waltz round in them all day every day and I genuinely feel 10000% better about myself when I wear them. I guess I’ve had a bit of a fashion eureka moment and I’m looking forward to seeing how they influence the rest of my wardrobe this year – I’m genuinely going to be devastated when it becomes too hot to wear them anymore.
