Wait, what’s this? Lj blogging about food?
Yes my friends, I am indeed blogging about food. And not just any food. Pancakes. Beautiful, beautiful pancakes. Now it probably comes as no surprise to anyone that I have a bit of a sweet tooth (because I’m just so goddamn sweet myself…) and Hanky Panky Pancakes is honestly absolute heaven to my fellow sugar fiends.
Holly and I had been wanting to visit for actual months after I first heard it mentioned on Twitter. We tried to go for one of our after work mate dates we used to have each week before I moved (sob) but they shut at 5pm so we used to always just miss them. We finally set foot over the threshold and indulged recently and oh holy wow it was worth the wait.
You can’t book a table there, and one thing we have learned is that it is always busy – which is just testament to how incredible the pancakes are. In fact, last time we went (which is the time these photos were taken and also incidentally the time I proposed to Holly by mistake) we actually had a half hour wait to be seated but don’t let this put you off or turn you away.
The choice of pancakes is absolutely bloody huge. I’ve never really been a pancake fan (until going here) but I genuinely want to sample the entire menu. With crepe style pancakes and American style stacked pancakes to choose from, you can have sweet, savoury and everything in between.
Holly and I prefer to create our own stacks rather than choose from the ones on the menu, and the choice of toppings is literally insane. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many ice cream flavours before in my life, and with a mix of fruits, chocolates, marshmallows, sauces and savoury toppings the combinations you can come up with are pretty much never ending. I should probably mention that they are incredibly good value for money as well, I don’t think I’ve ever spent even £10 in there and that’s including drinks.
I chose two stacked pancakes with white chocolate sauce, coffee ice cream and marshmallows and oh MY God they were just insane. The ice cream was so perfectly creamy, and the actual pancakes themselves were cooked to perfection. I think next time however I’ll just be getting one pancake rather than two and perhaps go for an extra topping simply because my tiny appetite couldn’t manage it all and I felt rude not finishing it especially as it tasted so damn incredible!
The other thing I feel that I should mention is the service. No matter how busy they get, the food is consistently good and the staff are always so friendly, calm and clearly able to cope well with managing the busy restaurant which considering how young they all are, is something really quite special. I think it’s so easy sometimes in that atmosphere to crack under the pressure or snap when things get stressful, so the service is definitely something to be commended.
I think I might be pretty useless at these food reviews as I literally have no idea what to write for them or how to describe food, but basically if you’re ever in or nearby Chester it’s well worth making the trip if you’re feeling a little peckish!
